Picaxe microcontrollers are popular and very easy to use. Simple instructions written in Basic are typed into the Program Editor and then downloaded via a cable into the chip. Input pins may take information from sensors etc, be interpreted and then output a response to a transducer. These ICs are fun to use. The help files and applications are extensive
